Cycles Plus Kawasaki & RPM Yamaha Guam Motocross Championships
Final round of 6
This past weekends Shell V-Power Smokin Wheels saw several championships determined after six exciting rounds of bar to bar banging motocross action that began earlier this year on January 24th. The six round Cycles Plus Kawasaki & RPM Yamaha Guam Motocross Championships saw competitors from both Guam and Japan competing on a combination of natural and man made off road course. The course itself was specifically designed for the high flying motocross motorcycles and atvs that were to be competing and was changed slightly after each round allowing for something challenging and different for the competitors and fans alike to enjoy. The action during the six round season between the competitors was close and intense with riders only at times inches apart soaring over a multiple of jumps and hills..

The Champions.

Defending Guam Open and 250cc motocross champion #786 Jesse Clokey picked up support late in 2009 from RPM Yamaha and was determined to repeat taking his new ride a Yamaha Yzf250 to the top of the winners box. Clokey had several championship challenges from several riders but it was Pacific Trucking team rider #11 Mike Limtiaco aboard a Kawasaki who gave him the closest race. The two were never ever far apart out on the track often swapping positions back and forth while bringing their ever growing fan base to its feet. It all came down to the last heat of the last round during what is Guams largest and longest running motorsports event the Shell V-Power Smokin Wheels Weekend. The chase for the championship was so close going into the final heat of the series that both riders needed to finish and finish ahead of the other in oerder to earn the points needed to take the championship. In that final heat Clokey aboard the Yamaha stayed ahead of Limtiaco to take the championship. Limtiaco took second in the championship with Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #7 Jonathan Lizama finishing strong to take the third place championship position.

Guam future motocross stars

Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #2 Ricco Pereira the defending Guam 85cc motocross champion rode a near perfect sereis taking the win in 4 of the 6 rounds held to successfully defend his 2009 title. Pereira’s closest competitor was Kawasaki mounted and House of Chin Fe supported Jr Cepeda who took the win in two of the six rounds making it a Kawasaki win sweep of the series for that respective class. Cepeda took second in the series with Robit Cabe aboard a Suzuki taking third in the championship.

Old man dodges a bullet

In the Open Atv class Cycles Plus team rider Robert Bucek made it three championships in a row aboard Suzuki Ltr450, his eighth in the last ten years and his 20th since he began racing atv’s in 1985. Bucek who was ineligible to compete in the final round of the series because of a class rule had to hope his nearest rival in the championship, his daughter 16 year old Keara Bucek, would not score the sufficient amount of points needed to overtake him.  The rule allows for Guam riders to compete in the All Japan ATV championship round held in conjunction with the Shell V-Power Smokin Wheels in the ATVA Open A-B class. The older Bucek having competed and won in the ATVA Pro class in the past was therefore not permitted to move into a lower or non pro class. Keara Bucek racing for the powerhouse RPM Yamaha team was in the drivers seat to knock her father off the throne and only needed to finish with 34 points to take the championship. After the first heat she was half way there and only needed a fifth place finish in the final heat. At the start of the second heat Keara was in good position early off the start but in her attempt to pass she drove her Yamaha Yfz450 straight into the back of another competitor sending her flipping off the course. The wreck caused her to be unable to continue thereby losing any chance of dethroning the older Bucek of the Open Atv championship. Kawasaki mounted Mathew Atorga racing for the Aloha Maid team in his first year on the big quads took third place in the championships just behind the younger Bucek Keara who placed second.

In the Kids Atv classes the girls came from no where in the last several rounds to dominate taking two of the three kids class championships. Aloha Maid team rider Mason Manglona aboard a DRX kept the Kids 50cc Atv championship in control of the boys by taking that class championship. Jeremy Jones aboard a DRX racing for team Triple J took second in class with Luke Reyes taking third aboard his team Aloha Maid DRX.

The Girls take it from the boys

In the Kids 70cc Atv class Polaris mounted Raven Girgan supported by Tsunami Motorsports ran a near consistent season thereby earning the points needed to take the championship. The seven year old Girgan will now take her racing up into the 90cc Kids atv class where she hopes to gain even more great experiences. Taking second was Aloha Maid team rider Isaiah Reyes aboard a DRX with Guam’s 2009 champion Gabriel Munoz placing third aboard a DRX.

Rookie sensation and a big part of the moto girl domination this year #8 Aubrey Taimanglo may have started out the season inexperienced but after six rounds of mud and dust she is now the champion of the Kids 90cc Atv class. Aubrey took the championship by never giving up and doing her best to finish strong in every heat in which she did. Taking second in the championship was Aloha Maids own Marcus Manglona with third place in the championship going to GTR Motorsports own Dylan Aguon supported by Winzler & Kelly Consulting.

Up next to be held on Sunday May 30th at the Guam International Raceways Jose and Hermenia Calvo Memorial Off Road Park will be the Schools Out Motocross!!! The event will be open to all ages 4 years and up and to all classes. Racing is scheduled to start at 1pm free for all to come out and watch.  For more information contact the Guam racing Federation Public Information Officer at 727-5381 or visit www.AtvMotocrossGuam.com

Cycles Plus Kawasaki and RPM Yamaha Motocross Championships
Round 5 of 6

Hot could only be the right way to describe this past Sunday’s motocross racing held at the Guam International Raceway in Yigo. Round five of the scheduled six round Cycles Plus Kawasaki and RPM Yamaha Motocross Championships kicked off at 1pm under a hot tropical sun and saw a full day of high flying bar banging motorcycle and atv racing. As in previous rounds motorcycle and atv classes ranged from kids to adult classes giving everyone competing someone at a similar level to race against.

Open Motorcycle race action

#11 Mike Limtiaco representing Pacific Trucking took two great starts in both of his heats to lead wire to wire for the overall win. It wasn’t a complete cake walk for Limtiaco as early on the current points leader #786 Jesse Clokey racing on the RPM Yamaha supported Yzf250 and former Guam champion #7 Jonathan Lizama aboard the Cycles Plus Kawasaki Kxf250 put heavy pressure on the rear wheel of the leader Limtiaco. The lead trio had a close elbow to elbow battle going on for the first four laps of the eight lap heat when they began to encounter lapped riders in which Limtiaco and Lizama were able to fly past with out incident. Clokey on the other hand was taken out by a lapper that caused him to crash hard. Clokey was able to quickly jump back on to his Yamaha after the crash and with a bloody chin began to climb back up into a top five finishing position. When the checkers finally fell it was Jonathan Lizama taking the second place overall position with Clokey taking third. Kawasaki mounted #53 Tom Tarnate the reigning Guam Open Vet champion took home fourth overall, RPM Yamaha team rider #88 Quirino Cabe took fifth, while #25 Fleet Services team rider Lawrence Limtiaco, #17 Antonio Cabe, Triple J team rider #33 Jake Jones, Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #5 Shawn Aguilo, #94 Bryan Barker, #52 David Yamasta, and #94 Gary Camacho took sixth through twelfth place respectively. The battle for the Open Motorcycle class championship after five rounds has tightened up and will come down to the final round to be held during this years Shell V-Power Smokin wheels scheduled for Saturday April 18th. Currently Jesse Clokey and his RPM Yamaha supported Yzf250 have just a 3 point lead with 219 points over the Pacific Trucking team rider of Mike Limtiaco aboard the #11 Kawasaki with 216 points.

85cc Kids Mini Bike race action

Kawasaki mounted #1 JR Cepeda who had just acquired John Stone Supply as a new team supporter made it two overall wins in a row beating out Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #2 Ricco Pereira in the final heat for the round win. The duo put on an exciting race in both their heats with #10 Robit Cabe taking third and #199 Frank Vawters Jr. taking fourth both mounted on Suzuki machines. First time racer #5 Stephen Bonfield earned his rookie stripes by consistently finishing fifth in both heats run aboard a Kawasaki. #4 Christian Duke took his Yamaha to a strong respectable sixth place finish. The battle for the 85cc championship going into the final April 18th round is between the two Kawasaki mounted riders of Pereira and Cepeda with Pereira currently having a ten point lead advantage over his nearest challenger Cepeda.

Other class race action

In the Open Atv class #1 Robert Bucek took his Cycles Plus Suzuki Ltr450 to its fifth overall win of the championships with Keara Bucek on the #9 RPM Yamaha Yfz450 taking second and rookie sensation Stephen Bonfield in his second class event of the day finishing in third aboard a very fast Kawasaki Kfx450.

In the 90cc Kids Atv Class Aubrey Taimanglo took the win aboard her #8 DRX machine over #27 Marcus Manglona aboard his team Aloha Maid machine. In the 90cc Kids Atv championship Aubrey Taimanglo leads currently Marcus Manglona by a single point going into the final round to be held in April.

Gabriel Munoz and his #95 70cc kids atv let everyone know Sunday that he and his machine are back by taking the win over second place finisher Tsunami Motorsports supported #83 Raven Girgan. Sitting in second and third in that championship are #95 Gabriel Munoz and #16 Isaiah Reyes each with a 166 points respectively.

Team Aloha Maids #49 Mason Manglona swept both 50cc Kids Atv heats Sunday and has thereby locked in the championship in the 50cc Kids Atv division. Taking second in the round was #33 Jeremy Jones aboard the team Triple J machine with first time racer Auto Works supported #75 Owen Rios taking third aboard a DRX.

In the 250cc Motorcycle class #11 Mike Limtiaco took the Pacific Trucking Kawasaki Kxf250 to a two moto sweep for the win. Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #7 Jonathan Lizama placed second while current 250cc points leader #786 Jesse Clokey finished in third. Kawasaki mounted #53 Tom Tarnate, and RPM Yamaha supported #88 Quirino Cabe rounded out the top five respectively while #17 Antonio Cabe, and #33 Jake Jones put on a great battle to place sixth and seventh respectively.

RPM Yamaha and Cycles Plus Kawasaki Motocross Championships
Round four of six

The fourth round of the six round RPM Yamaha and Cycles Plus Kawasaki Motocross Championships took place this past Sunday at the Guam International Raceway in Yigo. Classes competing in the championship ranged from both two and four wheeled kids mini bike and atv classes up to the bigger more powerful full sized off road motorcycles and atv machinery. The racing kicked off at 1pm under clear sunny skies free to the public to come out and watch.

Open Motorcycle class race action saw #14 teenaged Paul Errol Angoco aboard a Yamaha Yzf250 make his way to the lead from within a top five start in both of his heat races. Once in the lead Angoco was able to securely hold on to take the win in both heats to take the round 4 overall for the open motorcycle class. The battle now was for second and was between RPM Yamaha supported #786 Jesse Clokey, Pacific Trucking’s #11 Mike Limtiaco, and #7 Jonathan Lizama who was aboard the Cycles Plus Kawasaki Kxf250. The three riders battled in both heats with each rider taking his turn up in the second place position. At first it appeared as if Clokey aboard the Yamaha was going to be able to take and hold the position but in the second heat he while in the second place position crashed cart wheeling end over end himself and his machine. When Clokey and his machine finally came to a rest from the crash Clokey had to first lift his machine from off himself before dusting himself off and reentering the race. Clokey’s misfortune was #11 Mike Limtiaco’s gain as he inherited the position finishing with a second place in heat one and a third place in heat two for second place overall for the round. Taking third overall and riding very consistently was Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #7 Jonathan Lizama with #786 Jesse Clokey battling back to take fourth overall after having gone down earlier in a heat. The RPM Yamaha supported rider Clokey still maintains the points lead in the championship with 179 points over #11 Pacific Trucking’s Mike Limtiaco who has 166 points with two more rounds remaining in the championship. Taking fifth through tenth in round four respectively was #88 Quirino Cabe aboard a RPM Yamaha supported machine, #17 Antonio Cabe also aboard a RPM Yamaha supported machine, #33 Jake Jones aboard the Triple J backed Honda Crf250, US Air force serviceman #94 Bryan Barker aboard a Yamaha Yzf450, Suzuki mounted #52 David Yamasta and in tenth was #93 Yamaha mounted Bernard Crisostomo.

85cc Kids mini bike race was dominated this round by Kawasaki mounted #1 JR Cepeda who is supported by the House of Chin Fe. Cepeda was able to steel the lead off the start in both of the 85cc heats to lead wire to wire for the win. Taking second in the round in class was Ricco Pereira who had been up to this point undefeated in the championship. Taking third was Suzuki mounted #199 Frank Marshal Vawters who together with #10 Robit Cabe also aboard a Suzuki put on a great battle for the position with Vawters just edging out Cabe at the checkers in the final second heat of the round. Cabe took the fourth place overall position with #4 Yamaha mounted Ethan Cabe in fifth followed by Christian Duke also aboard a Yamaha.

In the Kids Atv classes it was all team Aloha Maid taking home the class wins respectively in round four. #16 Luke Reyes edged out Aloha Maid team mate #49 Mason Manglona to take the 50cc Kids Atv win with both riders competing on the popular DRX machines. In the 70cc Kids Atv class #18 Isaiah Reyes took his Aloha Maid supported DRX to the win over Tsunami Motorsports supported #83 Raven Girgan and #11 Jose Simpson. Taking the 90cc Kids Atv class win was Marcus Manglona aboard another Aloha Maid supported DRX machine. Taking second in the 90cc kids atv class was female rookie racer #8 Aubrey Taimanglo.

In the Open Atv class Cycles Plus rider #1 Robert Bucek came from behind to take first with RPM Yamaha mounted #9 Keara Bucek edging out Aloha Maid team rider Mathew Astorga who was aboard a Kawasaki to take second with astorga grabbing third.

250cc Motorcycle class results saw Paul Errol Angoco sweep the class aboard his #14 Yamaha Yzf250. Taking second in class was team Cycles Plus Kawasaki rider #7 Jonathan Lizama with #786 Jesse Clokey filling the final step on the podium. Taking fourth was #88 Quirino Cabe with Triple J team rider Jake Jones taking his #33 Honda to another top five finish.

The big 450cc motorcycle class was again dominated by Pacific trucking team rider Mike Limtiaco aboard his now popular up in the front #11 Kawasaki machine. Limtiaco now has a perfect win score with 8 heat wins in the 450cc class and commands the points for the championships in the class. Taking second was #17 Antonio Cabe aboard the RPM Yamaha supported Yzf450 with another Yamaha mounted rider #94 Bryan Barker taking third in class in just his very first championship motocross event on Guam.

RPM Yamaha and Cycles Plus Kawasaki Motocross Championship Series
Round 3 of 6

The Guam International Raceway in Yigo was inundated with motorcycles, atvs and those enthusiasts who enjoy them this past Sunday. Round 3 of the scheduled 6 round RPM Yamaha and Cycles Plus Kawasaki Motocross Championship Series ran in conjunction with the annual Hit Radio 100 car show Auto Jam in which this years theme was “I Love My Bike”. The two events were free to the public to come out and watch and drew a large number of people to each of the two GIR venues the GIR Dragstrip and the GIR Jose and Hermenia Calvo Memorial Off Road Park.

Improved Motocross Course

Round 3 of the RPM Yamaha and Cycles Plus Kawasaki Motocross Championship Series saw a much improved and extended motocross course. Thanks to the enormous efforts put forth by Hawaiian Rock Product’s heavy equipment and their employees through out the past several weeks in between the championship rounds the GIR motocross course now includes several exciting new sections to its already long and technical jump infested layout.

The Open class contenders

With a stiff cool breeze and under a bright sunny sky the big guns of Guam motocross began to line up just after 1pm for the first of two heat races that would determine the day’s winners and losers. With a strong team which included points leader Jesse Clokey aboard the RPM Yamaha supported Yzf250 being joined by teenage motocross sensation Paul Errol Angoco, and Quirino Cabe also aboard the Yamaha Yzf 250 machines the rest of the competitors were all going to have to be on their A game to have any hopes of securing a possible win. Missing from the powerful RPM Yamaha team lineup was championship contender #77 Brian Gumataotao. The blazingly fast and talented motocross racer was out and on the injured list but there are hopes that Gumataotao will be back in action by April in time for this years Smokin Wheels Weekend. Joining the championship was Japans own Atsuhiko Nakiri who is both a past two wheeled and four wheeled Smokin Wheels Ironman off road endurance champion. Atsuhiko was on island for some fun and was able to secure support in the form of a Honda Cr250 race bike ride from Al Kilgore of the Guam Automotive Clinic for the event. Other contenders lining up for the first of the two heats were Pacific Trucking’s own Mike Limtiaco, Triple J’s Jake Jones, RPM Yamaha team rider Antonio Cabe, and Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider Jonathan Lizama to name just a few.

Race High Lights Open MC

With each of the championship hopefuls motors all building rpm up on the start line to near destruction with the anticipation of the dropping of the green starter flag those on hand as witness could not just hear but feel the roar being produced reverberating inside ones chest. When the green flag finally dropped it was #215 Atsuhiko Nakiri of Japan launching the GAC Honda right to the front of the roaring pack of contenders. The 44 year old Atsuhiko Nakiri was demonstrating why he is known locally and in Japan as an ironman of the sport by keeping a firm hold on the lead regardless of the constant assaults from the pack. For the first half of the heat #11 Mike Limtiaco aboard the Pacific Trucking Kawasaki 450 was putting the pressure on the leader Atsuhiko while #786 Jesse Clokey, #14 Paul Errol Angoco, and #7 Jonathan Lizama were jockeying for the third place position. The leaders were all putting on an amazing battle each displaying the high flying and physical skills required to be at the front when the leader Japans own Atsuhiko Nakiri uncharacteristically over shot a turn and went cart wheeling end over end in what looked like a horrific crash. As horrible as it had appeared Atsuhiko after bouncing off the red dirt and rock infested terra firma managed to scramble to his feet and remount the GAC Honda before it had even stopped completely moving to rejoin the action now in fifth place. The misfortune of Atsuhiko handed #11 Mike Limtiaco the lead but it was to be a short lived lead as the duo of Yamaha riders Clokey and Angoco respectively both moved by Limtiaco to assume the lead.  The move by the two Yamaha riders moved the Pacific Trucking rider Limtiaco back to third but set up what was to be a great battle between team mates for the win. Clokey who had just undergone wrist surgery earlier that week was looking smooth even with the surgery stitches still in. Angoco who was right on Clokey’s tail pipe pushing to make the move into the lead was also looking smooth leading into technical section of the course when he put the move down to take the lead and take the eventual heat one win. Clokey took second with Limtiaco taking third.

In the second heat at the start RPM Yamaha team rider Jesse Clokey found himself at the front once again in the lead with once more Angoco pushing to make the pass for that lead. The two Yamaha pilots were in a league of their own as they quickly put distance between themselves and the rest of the contenders. As the laps started to wind down Angoco wicked it up a notch to put an exciting pass on the still recovering Clokey to take the heat win and the overall win for round 3. Taking second was Jesse Clokey followed by Limtiaco in third, Atsuhiko Nakiri in fourth, and Jonathan Lizama rounded out the top five.

Other Class Race Results and High Lights

Open atv

#303 Suzuki mounted Dave Demarest came out blazing easily taking the heat one Open atv class win with #1 Rob Bucek in second and #9 RPM Yamaha mounted Keara Bucek in third. In the second heat Rob Bucek took his Cycles Plus Suzuki Ltr450 straight to the front to take the win with Demarest placing second and Docomo’s Aloha Maid team rider Matt Astorga taking third aboard a Kawasaki 450. The Cycles Plus Suzuki rider Rob Bucek took the his third overall win in the class with Demarest in second, Keara Bucek in third overall and Astorga taking fourth overall for the round.

250cc MC

#14 Paul Errol Angoco took first and #786 Jesse Clokey took second both aboard Yamaha Yzf250’s both finishing the day on the top two positions of the podium with Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #7 Jonathan Lizama taking the third and final podium position for round three. Rounding out the top five was RPM Yamaha’s Quirino Cabe in fourth and #33 Triple J team rider Jake Jones taking fifth.

450cc MC

The green #11 has become a constant at the top of the 450 class with Pacific Trucking’s own team rider Mike Limtiaco having swept every heat thus far in this championship season. Limtiaco domination has him leading the 450 class with the maximum amount of points to be earned and placing himself securely in the second place position in the overall Open MC class just behind Jesse Clokey the current Open MC championship points leader. Taking second in the 450 class in round three was Japans own Atsuhiko Nakiri aboard the GAC Honda. Rounding out the top three was RPM Yamaha stable rider #17 Antonio Cabe.

Kids class results and high lights

The kids 85cc mini bike class saw a heated battle between several of the top contenders which saw House of Chin Fe supported rider JR Cepeda take his Kawasaki to a heat one win over class points leader #2 Ricco Pereira aboard the team Cycles Plus Kawasaki Kx85 and Suzuki mounted #199 Frank Marshal Vawters in third. In the second heat Pereira grabbed the lead and took the win giving him his third out of three overall round wins in class for the year. Cepeda took the second place position with Suzuki mounted #10 Robit Cabe passing Vawters to take third. Vawters finished fourth with #4 Yamaha rider Ethan Cabe rounding out the top five.

In the 90cc Kids Atv class Dylan Aguon took his GTR supported DRX to the front in both of the two heats to take the overall win in class for the round. Taking second was Docomo Aloha Maid team rider #27 Marcus Manglona with #8 Aubrey Taimanglo taking third.

70cc Kids Atv class action saw Daeven Aguon the younger brother of Dylan Aguon take the win sporting a green mohawk glued to the top off his helmet and was aboard a very fast DRX machine. Taking second place and thereby moving her self into the 70cc class points lead was #83 Raven Moon Girgan aboard her Tsunami Motorsports supported Polaris. Taking third was another Docomo Aloha Maid team rider #18 Isaiah Reyes.

The 50cc Kids Atv class was dominated this week by #49 Mason Manglona who took first and #16 Luke Reyes who took second with both racers riding for the very strong Docomo Aloha Maid team. Taking third in class was Triple J rider #33 Jeremy Jones.

Event: Cycles Plus Kawasaki & RPM Yamaha Motocross Championships Round 2

A large crowd of motocross fans and enthusiasts came out to the Guam International Raceway this past Sunday to watch and or participate in the second round of the six round Cycles Plus Kawasaki & RPM Yamaha Motocross Championships. The event was free to come out and watch and GIRMAC club members who participated in the event paid a $10. racer entry fee which is 50% less than that required in past years. The lower racer entry fees were due mainly in part to sponsor contributions such as Cycles Plus Kawasaki, RPM Yamaha and Shell Guam to name just but a few but also because of GIRMAC and the Guam Racing Federations continuous efforts in working towards making motorsports more economical to a much larger demographic of island participants.  The high flying bar banging two and four wheeled championship racing kicked off at 1pm with the big guns of the sport the Open Motorcycle class and continued on through out the day to include several kids and atv classes along with the Open atv class.

Class Race High Lights:
Open Motorcycle
Right off the starting line it was Pacific Trucking team rider Michael Limtiaco aboard a Kawasaki Kxf450 followed by team RPM Yamaha rider #77 Brian Gumataotao who quickly manhandled his blue Yamaha Yzf250 to the front of the lead pack consisting of now running in the second place position #11 Michael Limtiaco followed by RPM Yamaha team riders #786 Jesse Clokey, #4 Antonio Cabe, and #88 Quirino Cabe respectively. Gumataotao was forced to get on the throttle hard when his teammate #786 Jesse Clokey moved past Limtiaco and locked on to the leaders rear wheel. Both team RPM Yamaha riders Gumataotao and Clokey were going at each other hard for the win when Gumataotao clipped a high speed step up double and went flying off the course riding side saddle into a spectacular crash. Gumataotao’s crash gave the lead to Clokey who went on unchallenged to sweep the win in the Open Class. Taking second was Pacific Trucking’s #11 Michael Limtiaco followed by #4 Antonio Cabe aboard the Yamaha Yzf450 in third.

Open Atv
Cycles Plus team rider #1 Robert Bucek had his hands full during round two of the championships with the return after being deployed of #302 Suzuki mounted Dave Demarest. Demarest took an early lead and was followed by RPM Yamahas #9 Keara Bucek in second and Aloha Maid team rider Mathew Astorga aboard a Kawasaki Kfx450. The trio ran up front for the first several laps before #1 Robert Bucek was able to reel them in aboard the Suzuki Ltr450 and make the pass up into the second place position. From that point on Demarest had the crowd on their feet in his heroic effort in staving off Bucek’s relentless assaults at taking his lead away. Demarest was able to keep Bucek from making the pass to take the heat one win with Bucek coming back in second and final tie breaking heat to take the overall round win. Demarest took a second overall for the round but proved to everyone that he is back and still has the speed needed to possibly dethrone the multi time Guam and Japan atv champ of Robert Bucek. Taking third but tied for points for round two was Keara Bucek and rookie open atv class racer Aloha Maid team rider Mathew Astorga respectively.

On Sunday January 24th a large crowd of motocross fans came out to the Guam International Raceway to enjoy some bar banging high flying motorcycle and atv racing. The event was the first round of the scheduled six round RPM Yamaha & Cycles Plus Kawasaki Motocross Championships. The raceway gate opened at 9am Sunday for the event and was free to all to come out to watch. The racing action got started just before 2pm and went on for the rest of the day.

Open Motorcycle Round 1 Race Action

With the sun blazing and a much appreciated cool breeze the stars and future stars of Guam motocross lined up for the first of two heats. As the racers began to line up the tension and excitement began to fill the air and was felt as both Cycles Plus Kawasaki and RPM Yamaha had their stable of team riders lining up along side a host of other teams all in which were there vying for this championship. With the starting line quickly filling it became evident that this championship was going to be the start to a very exciting and physical six round series of events.

HEAT ONE
At the drop of the land rush start it was Cycles Plus Kawasaki team rider #5 Jonathan Lizama who took the lead in heat one followed closely by both #7 Brian Gumataotao and reigning champion #786 Jesse Clokey both racing for team RPM Yamaha. Also getting into the mix was #11 Michael Limtiaco racing for team Pacific Trucking, #88 Quirino Cabe team RPM Yamaha, #33 Jake Jones aboard a black Honda, Antonio Cabe another team RPM Yamaha rider, and Lawrence Limtiaco racing for team Fleet Services. The pack of eight quickly put down laps easily jumping through the many doubles and large jumps as they rubbed elbows and threw up chunks of dirt. After several hard fought battles that resulted in passes and a few hard but spectacular crashes the race found a fast paced rhythm. At the finish of heat one it was Lizama followed by Clokey, and then Gumataotao rounding out the top three. Heat two would be the deciding factor on the final overall results.

HEAT TWO
Guam’s current reigning open motocross champion Jesse Clokey proved why he holds that title by blasting off with the heat two lead aboard his Yamaha Yzf250 right from the drop. Clokey then never looked back putting distance between himself and the rest of his competitors as he took what appeared to be an easy heat two win. The RPM Yamaha team rider Jesse Clokey with his heat one second place finish and his heat two win was declared the round one winner. Cycles Plus team rider Jonathan Lizama remounted after an early crash in heat two to take a third place heat finish for second place for the round. Rallying to catch up was rookie rider Robit Casper Cabe aboard the #10 Suzuki Rm85 who placed second in class and third in class finisher Guam’s Reigning TT champion JR Cepeda aboard the House of Chin Fee supported Kawasaki Kx85. 2010 Warm Up Motocross Race

With the weather just on the side of being a monsoon a few hardy motocross racers lined up to challenge each other, the weather, and the swamp like course conditions during a scheduled warm up motocross event that happened this past Sunday. The scheduled warm up motocross race event was to allow riders some race experience time in anticipation of the upcoming 6 round 2010 Guam Motocross Championships which is set to kick off on Sunday January 24th at the GIR.

Gates were opened at the Guam International Raceway at 9am that morning to allow competitors for some practice on the motocross layout before the start of the scheduled 1pm Warm Up event. At the time practice was being held the motocross course was in prefect condition for the competitors with many of the open class motocross bikes taking full advantage of the ideal conditions. Former Guam motocross champion Michael Limtiaco joined his brother Lawrence Limtiaco also a past Guam motocross champion on the course for some orientation laps. Both Limtiaco brothers aboard the green Kawasaki race bikes looked fast as they joined current Guam champion Jesse Clokey who was aboard his RPM Yamaha Yfz250 on the course. Also putting in fast lap times on the big machines out on the course was rookie racer Antonio Cabe his older brother Quirino Cabe both riding the RPM Yamaha supported Yzf machines and reigning Vet champion Tom Tarnate aboard his own Kawasaki Kxf250. With what was looking to be a strong field of open class competitors the clouds moved in along with the wind and the rain. After a short and wet rider’s meeting several classes elected to postpone their heats until the rain stopped. These classes included the open motorcycle and atv classes. The kids classes how ever found the wet dismal monsoon like conditions to their liking perfect for having fun and for challenging each other with some racing.

The first class to kick off the 2010 racing season were the Kids Atv class. Female motocross racer Raven Girgan took her Tsunami Motorsports Polaris to an early lead and had quickly put some distance between herself and her fellow competitors. Running in second place at the half way point was rookie racer Aubrey Taimanglo aboard a yellow DRX and behind her was Jonathan Rose also on a DRX. Up front in the second half of the race it was looking to be an easy win for Girgan but as the rain began to fall even heavier she suddenly was flagged in for some repairs. It appears that Girgans machine had a bolt that had worked itself loose and her pit support made up of Tsunami Motorsports and her father recognized the problem and quickly made the required repair to get Girgan quickly back into the race. Meanwhile Aubrey Taimanglo who had been running a strong second began to have mechanical issues with her DRX and was flagged by her pit crew to come in for repairs. After a short time Taimanglo reentered the race but eventually was forced to retire due to mechanical issues.  With both Girgan and Taimanglo having mechanical problems Jonathan Rose moved himself up and into the lead. Rose was looking strong getting faster it appeared after every lap completed. Now with just one lap left it looked as if Rose was going to take the very first win of 2010 but again what appeared to be was not to be as with just one turn left and 30 yards from the checkered flag Rose’s DRX machine came to fluttering halt. Unfortunately for Rose his pit crew made up of his father Jim Rose who had graciously volunteered to help as track safety was all the way at the other side of the motocross course and was unable to help his son refire the DRX before Girgan on her Tsunami Motorsports Polaris snatched back the lead she had once held. Girgan took the win with Rose eventually restarting his machine to take second with Taimanglo taking the third place finish.

The 85cc minibke class was the next and final class to take advantage of the scheduled Warm Up event. Last year’s rookie Suzuki mounted Frank Vawters jr. was joined by first time racers Robit Cabe also aboard a Suzuki and Ethan Cabe aboard a Yamaha. The two Cabe boys who have riding experience and had spent time late last year practicing on the motocross track located at the Guam International Raceway in anticipation of the 2010 motocross season looked fast they both launched off the line at the start. With elbows out and with great riding posture Robit Cabe also known as Casper took the lead. Casper showed the crowd on hand that he was fearless as regardless of the conditions he held the throttle wide open and cleared several of the large double jumps and tore his way through the gnarly whoop section. Casper was impressive in his debut race and proved that he will be a serious title contender for this years 85cc Guam Motocross Championship. Ethan Cabe aboard the Yamaha was also putting in impressive lap time as he held off Frank Vawters for the second place position. The three up front riders put on a great race with Robit Cabe taking first, Ethan Cabe second, and Frank Vawters jr. third.

The next scheduled event will be the kick off this year’s highly anticipated 2010 Guam Motocross Championships with round 1 on Sunday January 24th. The championship round will be held at the Guam International Raceway’s Jose and Hermenia Calvo Memorial Off Road Park in Yigo. Racing starts at 1pm and will be free to all to come out to watch and support. The Raceway’s Jose and Hermenia Calvo Memorial Off Road Park will be open this coming Sunday January 17th for riding and practice.
